Description
This is our original design in tribute to the Chononton Nation.
The Chonnonton were the original inhabitants of southern Ontario – from the western shore of Lake Ontario, along the north shore of Lake Erie. The great Chief, Tsouharissen (“Child of The Sun”) united 10 individual groups into a powerful nation. Their territory contained vast quantities of flint which they traded with their neighbours – regardless of affiliation – and when the French met them they called them “La Nation Neutre” (The Neutral Nation) because of this trade. It is estimated that about 1600, their nation numbered some 40 villages of about 1,000 persons each, of which 10% were Warriors. They may have been one of the only groups to pen deer (for food & trade).
