Description
In Anishinaabemowin, it’s called “Shkitagen,” but it’s commonly known as “Chaga.” This medicinal fungus, Inonotus obliquus, has been used for thousands of years by Indigenous peoples in northern Turtle Island, Europe, and parts of Asia. It is believed to contribute to good health and longevity.
Antioxidants enhance health and slow aging by protecting cells from damage caused by free radicals, according to the National Cancer Institute.
Add Chaga to hot water to make a nice tea (add a little honey or a drop of maple syrup). A teaspoon to your mug, or a tablespoon or two to your thermos; let steep for a few minutes. You can even chill it and drink it cold. You may use a tea-ball, teabag, strainer – or nothing at all – with one rule: keep adding water & drinking the liquid until all the colour has gone!
Chaga is a growth on Birch trees in cold climates that absorbs nutrients, making them easily digestible for humans. Research has highlighted Chaga’s healing properties and its high levels of betulinic acid, which is rich in immune-boosting phytochemicals. It has very few known side effects. Studies show Chaga has over four times the antioxidant power of strong oils, thirty times the healing enzymes of other superfood mushrooms, twice the antioxidants of blueberries, and 50% more than Acai, making it one of the highest antioxidant foods!
